November 2003California Action on DEHP "Not Justified by the Scientific Evidence"The State of California's action in listing DEHP as a reproductive toxicant under the provisions of Proposition 65 is not justified by the scientific evidence, according to the American Chemistry Council's Phthalate Esters Panel. October 2003Experts confirm no general risk to human health from the Plasticiser DEHPEU Risk Assessment comes a stage closer to conclusion
EU member state experts have confirmed that the health of people in
general is not being endangered by the use of one of the world's
most commonly used plasticisers, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP).
The experts, representing all 15 EU member states at a technical
meeting held in Italy to discuss the EU risk assessment for DEHP,
agreed that the exposure of the general population is well below
(at least 280 times) levels at which their health might be put at
risk. Therefore no risk reduction measures are needed for the
general population.
February 2003Health Care Without Harm publishes misleading comments on Swedish reportOn February 20, 2003 the environmental organisation Health Care Without Harm issued a press release about a proposal from Sweden to restrict the use of DEHP. The Health Care Without Harm Statement is both misleading and factually incorrect. HCWH fails to mention a number of facts. October 2002EU Scientific Committee says there are no grounds on which to restrict the use of DEHP in medical devices
The European Union's Scientific Committee on Medicinal Products and
Medical Devices has published an Opinion on the use of
di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in medical devices saying that it
can make no recommendations to limit its use, even for the most
highly exposed patients.
July 2002Some incorrect statements by Health Care Without HarmThe European Council for Plasticisers and Intermediates Response to HCWH Report on "Aggregate Exposures to Phthalates in Humans" March 2002Decision on DEHP Risk Assessment PostponedMember States given more time to consider important new research findingsThe European plasticiser industry has welcomed a decision to give EU Member States more time to consider important new research findings which could have a significant effect on the Risk Assessment of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). DEHP Risk Assessment is re-openedTwo new studies to be considered which show likelihood of adverse health effects to be much less than previously thoughtThe EU Risk Assessment on di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) has been re-opened in order for EU Member States to consider some crucial new evidence on health effects which has been found during recent toxicological studies. February 2000DEHP confirmed as non-carcinogenicInternational Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) reclassifies DEHP as Non-Carcinogenic to Humans The most commonly used phthalate plasticiser, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), has been confirmed as non-carcinogenic to humans by the world’s leading international authority on cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which is part of the World Health Organisation (WHO), has reclassified DEHP as “not classifiable as to carcinogenicity to humans.” November 1999'Shame On You, Greenpeace,' Says Chemical Manufacturers Association Phthalate Esters PanelThe following press release is issued by the American Chemistry Council (ACC) Phthalate Esters Panel in the United StatesGreenpeace and Healthcare Without Harm have made a series of misleading statements concerning the health and safety of medical devices made with DEHP, a plastic softener. We encourage the media and the public not to fall prey to this unwarranted scare mongering. The Panel's response to Greenpeace is "shame on you" for their campaign to scare the public and parents of children with unfounded claims. To search the press releases please click here.
